Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian overmantel mirrors became prominent in nineteenth-century interiors as central decorative elements designed specifically to sit directly above fireplace hearths. Their gently curved arches were crafted to complement the architectural proportions of traditional chimney breasts and heighten the reflection of light from gas lamps and candles.

These frames were constructed using pine or softwood bases, layered with composition moulding or gesso plaster to shape decorative relief details. Water gilding or oil gilding was then applied using genuine gold leaf over a prepared clay base known as bole.

Authentic pieces feature original mercury or silvered glass showing minor foxing or oxidisation, hand-carved or moulded gesso detailing on wooden backing boards, and natural crazing across the gilded finish consistent with historic age.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or hallway console table to create a focal point. Combining classical gilded proportions with modern neutral paintwork allows the architectural silhouette to stand out effectively.

Dust the gilded gesso frame gently using a clean, soft feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaning products which can erode original gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be sprayed onto a microfibre cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to prevent liquid seeping behind the frame.
