Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver mounted scent bottles gained immense popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries as essential accessories for personal grooming. Craftsmen combined glassmaking techniques, such as diamond cutting, with silversmithing to create functional containers for perfumes and scented waters.

These vessels were primarily crafted from lead crystal or blown glass, combined with sterling silver or silver-gilt collars, stoppers, and lattice overlays. Internal stoppers were often ground glass to prevent liquid evaporation.

Authentic pieces typically bear hallmarking on the silver collars or caps, indicating the maker, silver purity, assay office, and year of manufacture. The glass bases usually show signs of hand-cutting, polished pontil marks, or light natural surface wear.

Small vanity items fit well on dressing tables, bathroom counters, or arranged alongside brass trays and books on a bedside table. Grouping bottles of varying heights creates a layered decorative vignette.

The glass exterior should be wiped with a soft, lint-free cloth, while the silver elements can be cleaned using a specialist silver polishing cloth. Avoid immersing the piece entirely in water to prevent liquid from entering the stopper fitting or tarnishing unsealed mounts.
