Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An eight-day longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, free-standing pendulum clock driven by weights that require winding once every seven to eight days. Popularised in the 17th to 19th centuries, these timepieces feature timber cases, typically crafted from mahogany or oak, housing brass mechanical movements.

Traditional longcase clocks feature solid or veneered mahogany cases with hand-cut joinery. Dials were made from sheet brass with cast brass spandrels or painted iron plates, housing hand-forged steel and brass gear trains operated by heavy lead weights suspended on gut line or cord.

Authentic Georgian longcase clocks display hand-carved details, cast brass spandrels, engraved arch dials, and original winding holes. Examine the movement for hand-hammered brass plates, square-headed steel screws, and maker details engraved directly onto the dial face.

A longcase clock serves as an architectural focal point when positioned in an entry hall, stairwell landing, or formal reception room. Pair it with clean-lined contemporary artwork or neutral walls to allow the rich timber tones and classical proportions to stand out.

Position the clock away from direct sunlight, radiators, and draughts to protect the mahogany veneer from warping or fading. Apply high-quality beeswax twice yearly, oil the mechanical movement every three to five years with specialised clock oil, and ensure the case remains level.
