Rue des Fontenelles has dated this Antique Harbour Oil Painting to the 1940s.
Mareels was a painter and etcher and was educated at the Academy in Brussels under the direction of Richir and J. Delville (1911-1914 and 1918-1919). He painted figures, portraits, domestic genre scenes, landscapes and marines. During the First World War, he was injured on the Yser front and evacuated to Brittany, where he would like to return later. He found inspiration in the typical harbors and the Breton fishermen. He was a teacher at the Art School in Ixelles. His work can be found in the Museums in Leuven, Ghent, Ixelles, Uccle and La Louvière. Maurice Mareels is listed in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists. (piron)
