Very Fine Nineteenth Century Centre Table

19th century
Description

Exceptionally fine centre table with crisply carved four splay base and made of a very fine cut of exotic timber that has faded to a nicely patinated golden brown, this must have cost a lot to commission when new and it follows that it would therefore have been made for an important house. We especially like the way that the legs begin parallel to the pedestal and terminate parallel to the floor.

Circa 1830

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century centre table is a prominent piece of furniture designed to be viewed from all sides and positioned in the middle of a hall, drawing room, or salon. Popularised during the Regency and Victorian eras, these tables frequently feature circular tops supported by a central turned pedestal column with splayed legs.

High-grade hardwoods such as flame mahogany, rosewood, and walnut were primarily used, often displaying hand-cut veneers to highlight rich grain patterns. Construction typically incorporated pegged wooden joints, hand-carved aprons, turned columns, and concealed brass castors under the feet.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-crafted elements, including subtle variations in turned detailing, hand-dovetailed tilt-top blocks, and original brass hardware. Natural patination, slight timber movement, and authentic wear on the base also distinguish genuine antiques from modern reproductions.

Place the table in an entrance hall or living area to serve as a dramatic structural focal point. Accentuate the rich timber hues by topping it with a contemporary ceramic vase, oversized floral arrangement, or a collection of art books beneath a statement pendant light.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth along the direction of the wood grain, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or aerosol polishes. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the finish, and shield the surface from direct sunlight and liquid exposure.
