Antique Victorian Figured Mahogany Serpentine Tilt-top Dining Centre Table

19th century
Description

An antique Victorian figured mahogany dining and centre table with an unusual serpentine-shaped top and a beautifully carved pedestal base.

The generously sized solid mahogany top has a moulded edge and an attractive shaped outline with sweeping curves and rounded lobes. The warm figured mahogany displays a rich colour and natural grain throughout.

The table is raised on a substantial turned central column with carved oval detail above four bold scrolling supports. Each leg terminates in a discreet castor allowing the table to be moved with ease.

The top tilts vertically when not in use making the table practical to store against a wall while also displaying its decorative outline. When lowered it provides a useful dining surface and would also make an impressive centre table in a large entrance hall drawing room or reception area.

Condition report

In good original condition with minor marks and signs of use consistent with age and character. The table is solid, sturdy and functional with a good rich colour.

A Victorian tilt-top centre table is a piece of 19th-century furniture designed with a hinged tabletop that can be tilted vertically when not in use. This allowed homeowners to clear floor space in multipurpose rooms while displaying the wood grain of the tabletop against a wall.

Victorian centre tables were predominantly constructed from solid and veneered hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. Internal structural blocks and latch mechanisms were typically made from oak, pine, or cast brass.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, hand-turned pedestal columns, and original brass catch mechanisms beneath the top. Natural wear on the underside of the base and period-appropriate castors are also key indicators of authenticity.

A tilt-top table can serve as a focal point in an entrance hall, positioned either flat with decorative ceramics or tilted vertically to showcase the timber grain. It can also function as a compact dining or breakfast table in traditional and contemporary living spaces.

Mahogany tables should be positioned away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish fading. Dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish periodically protects the wood finish without causing synthetic buildup.
