From Wikipedia: Balthasar Denner (15 November 1685 - 14 April 1749) was a German painter, highly regarded as a portraitist. He painted mostly half-length and head-and-shoulders portraits and a few group portraits of families in interiors. Usually Denner concentrated on the face; clothes and paraphernalia were done by other painters or later his daughter. His chief peculiarity consisted in the fineness of his mechanical finish, which extended to depicting even the almost invisible furze of hair growing on smooth skin. He is particularly noted for his heads of old men and women.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century portraiture emphasized character depth, detailed facial rendering, and realistic depictions of fabric and light, often influenced by Northern European Baroque and Rococo traditions.

Artists used oil pigments ground with natural drying oils, applied onto linen canvas or solid wooden boards, which were then mounted into hand-carved, gessoed, and gilded timber frames.

Authentic period paintings show natural age-related craquelure across the paint layer, genuine oxidisation and patina on the reverse of the panel or frame, and hand-carved wooden frame construction.

A period oil portrait works well as a focal point above a mantelpiece or integrated into an eclectic gallery wall alongside contemporary artwork to create layered visual contrast.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush and consult a professional conservator for cleaning.
