Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares made in the Arita region, historically shipped via the port of Imari. It is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and gold enamel decorative motifs.

Imari porcelain is constructed from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to produce a durable white ceramic body. Decoration combines cobalt blue underglaze paint with coloured enamel overglazes and metallic gilding.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted asymmetrical patterns, subtle firing irregularities or spur marks on the base, and characteristic deep cobalt blue tones paired with iron-red enamelling.
