Antique Kurdish or South Caucasian Runner with Garden Design, Superb Condition, Circa 1920.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 14ft 4in x 3ft 4in (438 x 102cm).

Antique South Caucasian or Kurdish runner of superb design and colour.

Circa 1920.

A very good runner with linked octagonal medallions, very similar in design to the well known Caucasian 'Surahani' garden design rugs from the Shirvan Baku region. The design represents the classical garden layout with flowers and water courses. The runner has a soft warm colour palette and is framed with a traditional Caucasian border on a light indigo blue ground.

The runner is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and full pile. Please note that as with many Kurdish village weavings this runner has a very slight curve along its length as can be seen in the main image.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

The runner is suitable for heavy domestic use. A very good furnishing runner.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian and Kurdish runner rugs are hand-woven tribal textiles originating from the Caucasus and surrounding regions, recognized for bold geometric patterns, vibrant vegetable dyes, and long, narrow proportions suited to hallways and corridors.

These traditional carpets are constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation warp and weft, coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes before hand-knotting.

Authentic pieces feature wool foundations, natural colour variation known as abrash, irregular hand-woven selvedges, and distinct geometric motifs such as stepped medallions, stylized garden panels, and latch-hook borders.

A long geometric runner introduces warm accent colours and texture to narrow transitional spaces like hallways, entryways, or behind living room furniture, pairing effectively with both contemporary minimal finishes and traditional timber flooring.

Preserve wool runners by placing a high-quality non-slip underlay beneath them to reduce friction, vacuuming regularly without a rotary beater bar, and consulting a professional rug restorer for spot cleaning or washing.
