Fine Antique French Ormolu Rococo Clock ~ Cupid

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1870 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A very fine and substantial ormolu clock by the clockmaker Vincenti. Stunning Rococo balloon form of sweeping acanthus swags, scrolls and floral flourishes. To the top of a beautifully modelled figure of cupid, drawing back on his bow ready to fire an arrow.

The large dial is porcelain enamel on copper with its original, beautifully incised gilt hands and convex glass. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Vincenti et Cie. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link or paste this into your browser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wP_Spvfc5i8

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also in excellent condition just some tiny nibbles to the winding holes. The original glass has a few small and very light scratches.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France, Rococo ormolu clocks feature asymmetrical scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and classical figures crafted from gilded bronze, reflecting the ornate aesthetic of the Louis XV era.

These timepieces are primarily constructed from cast bronze coated with a thin layer of high-karat gold via mercury gilding, often paired with hand-painted white enamel dials and brass clockwork mechanisms.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-chased bronze details, mercury gilding depth with minor natural oxidisation in crevices, maker stamps or serial numbers on the movement, and fine enamel work on the dial face.

A gilded French clock serves as a focal piece when placed on a dark marble fireplace mantelpiece, a refined hallway console table, or alongside minimalist contemporary art to create visual contrast.

Dust the gilt metal gently with a dry, soft brush without using liquid polish or chemical cleaners, and ensure the mechanical movement is professionally oiled and serviced every three to five years.
