Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, also known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, freestanding pendulum clock enclosed within a tall wooden housing. Developed in the late seventeenth century, these timepieces housed long pendulum movements that provided greater accuracy than earlier clock styles.

Longcase clock cabinets were primarily crafted from fine cabinet woods such as mahogany, oak, walnut, or pine, often accented with flame mahogany veneers or marquetry. The internal clockwork mechanisms were constructed using brass movements, iron weights, and painted or engraved dial faces made from sheet iron or brass.

Authentic Georgian longcase clocks feature hand-joined wooden cases, often showcasing flame mahogany veneers, swan-neck pediments, and turned or twisted column accents. The dial faces commonly feature hand-painted spandrels, painted scenes or portraits in the arch, hand-cut brass or steel hands, and maker details inscribed directly onto the dial.

Positioning a longcase clock in an entryway, hallway, or dining space allows its vertical scale to act as an architectural accent. Surrounding the piece with minimalist furniture or neutral wall finishes creates an effective visual contrast between classic cabinet making and contemporary styling.

To preserve the timber and mechanical movement, position the clock away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas of high humidity. The wooden case should be dusted regularly with a soft dry cloth and treated periodically with beeswax polish, while the mechanical movement requires specialist servicing every few years.
