A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, free-standing, weight-driven clock encased in wood, developed in the late 17th century and perfected during the Georgian era.

Georgian cases were predominantly crafted from solid oak or flame mahogany veneers laid over secondary pine framing, housing cast brass clockworks, brass spandrels, and silvered dials.

Authentic 18th-century examples feature hand-cast brass dial spandrels, hand-engraved brass or silvered dials, original movement mounting blocks, and evidence of hand-planed timber on the back of the case.

The mahogany case should be conditioned with natural beeswax polish, positioned away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
