Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arched overmantel mirrors gained immense popularity during the nineteenth century in Britain, designed specifically to sit atop chimneypieces in formal reception rooms. Their curved upper edges mirrored the architectural lines of period mantle arches while reflecting light across grand, high-ceilinged rooms.

Frames from this period were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, layered with plaster or gesso to create intricate moulded details. These were subsequently painted or gilded, surrounding a silvered glass mirror plate held by a solid timber backboard.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature heavy wood backings, original joinery marks, and hand-moulded gesso details that show subtle cracking or craquelure. The mirror glass often exhibits slight foxing, light oxidation, or subtle distortions indicative of mercury or early silvering processes.

Place an arched overmantel mirror directly above a fireplace surround or rest a large floor-standing version against a focal wall to create depth. Pairing distressed painted frames with clean modern lines creates a balanced textural contrast in contemporary spaces.

Dust the painted gesso frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush to prevent flaking. Clean the glass by applying non-ammonia cleaner directly to a microfibre cloth rather than spraying the mirror surface to avoid liquid seeping into the frame joinery.
