Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, campaign writing slopes were portable wooden boxes designed for military officers and travellers to draft correspondence while away from home. They feature hinged interiors that unfold into angled writing surfaces, complete with compartments for inkwells, pens, and paper storage.

Writing slopes from the Georgian era were predominantly constructed from dense timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, lined internally with velvet or leather writing surfaces. Exterior corners and edges were fitted with flush-mounted brass corner brackets and straps to protect the box during transport.

Authentic period pieces feature flush-mounted brass hardware that sits completely level with the wood surface to prevent snagging during travel. Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass escutcheons, original lock mechanisms, and evidence of natural age and oxidisation on the timber and metal.

A campaign writing slope functions well as a decorative focal point on an office desk, sideboard, or bookshelf. Displaying it closed highlights the polished grain and brass hardware, while displaying it partially open showcases the internal structure and leather surface.

Preserve the finish by applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain of the timber using a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals. Keep the box away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the wood from drying, warping, or fading over time.
