Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century oak coffer is a heavy wooden storage chest made from solid oak, typically featuring panelled construction, hand-carved decoration, and a hinged lid. During this period, coffers served as the primary form of household storage for linens, clothing, and valuables.

Coffers from this period were crafted using joined oak frames secured with wooden dowels or pegs rather than glue or metal screws. The panels were set into grooved stiles, and iron strap hinges or loop hinges were attached to secure the lid.

Authentic period coffers exhibit hand-hewn tool marks, irregularities in the wood grain, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and natural oxidisation around original iron fittings. Wear patterns typically correspond to historic use, particularly around the feet and base.

An antique oak coffer can be integrated into contemporary spaces as an entryway bench, an end-of-bed storage unit, or a low statement table in a living room. The rich texture of aged oak provides visual contrast against minimalist walls and neutral textiles.

Preserve the original finish by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the coffer away from direct heat sources and maintain consistent humidity to prevent the oak from warping or cracking.
