1929 Sterling Silver Box

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Beeches Vintage
Description

This is a beautiful Sterling Silver Box from the 1920s. It would perfect for storing small items in. It comes in a gift bag and would be a very special present.

It was made by IS Greenberg & Co and it was Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1929.

The box has a Sterling Silver exterior and a beautiful engineered lined design to the lid with a blank rectangular cartouche in the centre. The hinge works well and the lid lifts to show a very pretty Cedar wood interior.

The Silver is shiny with a few small dents and scratches. There’s a small lined dint in the lid and it closes well but doesn’t sit completely flush with the base.

It weighs 236g and measures 11cm by 8.8cm (just over 4 1/4 inches by nearly 3 1/2 inches). The depth is 4cm (just over 1 1/2 inches).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco silver boxes were produced during the 1920s and 1930s, defined by geometric symmetry, clean rectangular forms, and engine-turned surface patterns that reflected the modern industrial aesthetic of the era.

These pieces were crafted from solid sterling silver containing 92.5 percent pure silver. The precise geometric patterns on the lid were created using engine turning, a specialized mechanical lathe process.

Authentic British pieces carry a complete set of hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the makers initials, the lion passant for sterling purity, an assay town mark, and the specific date letter corresponding to 1929.

Position the silver box on a bedside table, desk, or sideboard tray to hold small items. Its reflective metallic surface integrates smoothly with contemporary, minimalist, or vintage-inspired spaces.

Wipe the box regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth to prevent tarnish accumulation. To remove heavy oxidisation, use a specialized silver polishing cloth or mild silver foam, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals.
