Antique 1900 Sterling Silver Box

19th century
For Sale by Beeches Vintage
Description

This is a lovely Antique Sterling Silver Cigarette Box from the Edwardian early 1900s. It would be ideal for storing small items in such as jewellery. It would be a great gift.

The maker’s mark is too worn to read. It was Hallmarked in Chester in 1900. The Hallmarks are on the front of both the base and lid.

It’s made of Sterling Silver and it has a worn crest and the initials NJ elaborately engraved in the centre of the lid. The lid lifts to show a cedar wood lined base and a gilded interior lid. The base has green felt to prevent it marking surfaces it’s placed on.

The Silver is shiny. There are a number of dents to the lid and sides and a split to the Silver on one corner of the lid. The hinge works well. There are some scratches including one on the lid which can be seen in the photos. The interior wood lining has some staining.

Its total weight is 374g. It measures 10.3cm by 9.2cm (just over 4 inches by 3 1/2 inches). The height is 5.8cm (2 1/4 inches).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, sterling silver boxes were produced as functional items for dressing tables, desks, and vanity sets. These pieces often featured personal monograms or armorial engravings, reflecting the metalworking craftsmanship and personal tastes of the era.

Antique silver boxes were typically crafted from sheet sterling silver, shaped by hand-hammering or machine-stamping, and assembled with soldered joints. Hinge mechanisms were fitted precisely by hand, and interiors were sometimes gilt or lined with timber to protect stored items.

Authentic pieces carry official hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the lion passant mark for British sterling silver, alongside a makers mark, assay office mark, and a date letter indicating the exact year of manufacture.

Place a hallmarked silver box on a bedside table, dressing table, or desk tray to hold small items such as keys or jewellery. Pairing reflective silver with contrasting textures like dark timber, leather, or marble enhances its visual profile.

Maintain silver by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a silver polish formulated to remove tarnish. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or dipping chemicals, and keep the object in a low-humidity environment to minimise oxidisation.
