Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French painted mirrors from the early 20th century frequently draw design elements from Louis XV and Rococo styles, incorporating ornate crests, floral garlands, and molded frames. They feature painted or distressed gesso coatings applied over wooden frames, designed to complement period architectural features.

These mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved timber frame coated in gesso, a traditional mixture of chalk, gypsum, and pigment binder. The decorative frame surface was finished with paint or gilding before housing plate glass.

Authentic pieces display natural age-related craquelure, subtle chipping to the gesso layers revealing underlying wood, and timber backboards secured with historical fixings. The mirror plate may also exhibit edge oxidisation or foxing.

A large painted mirror can be leaned against a primary wall to bounce natural light and heighten visual scale. Combining the textured, painted frame with clean contemporary furniture creates a balanced contrast between historic details and modern lines.

Dust the detailed carving gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster, keeping liquid solutions away from gesso surfaces to prevent softening. Clean the glass with a slightly dampened microfibre cloth, taking care not to spill water onto the surrounding frame.
