Persian Shiraz Rug, Circa 1900, 1.62m X 1.05m

1900 - 1920
Description

Woven by the settled Khamseh tribal weavers in or around the city of Shiraz around 1900 in southern Persia, this is a charming tribal rug with lots of character. It has an all-wool foundation, a soft and glossy wool pile, and all natural colours. The design is composed of the ubiquitous triple conjoined geometric medallions with archaic interior ornaments which are surrounded by styled plants, birds and myriad other geometric ornaments. The spontaneity and asymmetry of the design suggest that this was made in a domestic setting by weavers who were familiar with their tribal traditions. Note the lovely colours, all derived from natural dyes, including a madder red, indigo blue and a really lovely bottle green. This is a riotously attractive Persian tribal rug which would enhance any setting. Professionally cleaned. The pile has even wear giving it the elusive lived-in look.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shiraz rugs are tribal hand-woven textiles produced by nomadic weavers in the Fars province of south-western Iran. They typically feature geometric diamond medallions, deep red or terracotta grounds, and bold stylized animal or botanical motifs.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. They feature natural vegetable dyes, yielding rich colour variations and durable textures.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied knots, flexible wool foundations rather than rigid cotton backings, natural colour abrash, and distinct geometric central medallions.

A tribal rug provides rich colour and pattern that grounds neutral modern spaces, serving as a focal point in entryways, living areas, or hallway spaces to contrast clean contemporary furniture.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush bar, rotate the rug annually to balance wear, and clean liquid spills immediately by blotting with a clean, dry cloth.
