Description

A fine early engraved carriage clock with a white enamelled dial showing cobalt blue Roman numerals and the retailers name Dent a Paris to the dial. Trefoil hands. Striking the hours and the half hours on a tuned bell and housed in a superb gilt 'one piece' case with hinged rear glazed door. The original lever escapement is the earlier type with mono metallic balance wheel . Edward Dent made the ships chronometer which accompanied Charles Darwin on the H.M.S Beagle in 1831 and of course built the great clock of Westminster (or 'Big Ben' as it's known). This clock is also signed to the upper back plate and has the number 58 and 2723 which is the Paul Garnier number stamped into the back of the door. All bevelled glass and a shuttered rear door. Edward Dent used the Garnier workshops in Paris for the supply of the carriage clocks which he sold in his prestigious London establishments. Circa 1850.

Developed in the early 19th century in France, carriage clocks were portable timepieces designed for travellers. Engineered with balance spring mechanisms rather than pendulums, they feature sturdy handles and glass panels to display the internal clockwork while protecting it during movement.

Traditional carriage clocks are crafted using cast or stamped brass and bronze cases, often gilded with gold (ormolu). Dials are made from fired white enamel with hand-painted numerals, set alongside bevelled glass plates and blued steel hands.

Authentic period examples feature hand-engraved casing, hand-finished movement plates, original balance wheel escapements, and maker signatures stamped into the backplate or printed onto the enamel dial.

A carriage clock functions as a refined accent piece when displayed on a living room mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive office desk. Its warm brass tones contrast well against minimalist stone, dark timber, or painted backdrops.

Gilded brass should be dusted gently using a dry microfibre cloth; liquid polishes and abrasive cleaners must be avoided as they can strip the gold gilding. Mechanical movements require periodic specialist horological oiling and servicing every five to seven years.
