A Rare Drocourt No. 14993: Carriage Clock and Calendar

19th century
Description

A Drocourt No. 14993: Carriage Clock circular enamel dial against a gilt mask,

The movement bearing Drocourt’s stamp and number

We are pleased to offer this fine and very rare carriage clock of French manufacture dating from the 3rd quarter of the 19th Century which has the complications of day and date.

As can be seen from the images the clock is in excellent condition and is currently being professionally serviced by Walsh of Purley Surrey to ensure long term customer satisfaction.

The fine quality movement of 8 day duration is signed and was possibly made for the English market.

The circular white porcelain dial is in perfect condition and retains its steel moon steel hands. Underneath are three subsidiary dials for the alarm , day and date which can be set from the rear of the clock. These dials have a beautiful gilded engine turned masking. It really is very uncommon to find such complications on a carriage clock and it would have been very expensive indeed when new.

The clock is 7.5 inches tall to the very top of the handle and 5.7 inches (handle down) ,4 inches wide and 3.3 inches deep making it suitable to be placed anywhere.

The clock is totally genuine and original

I would describe the overall condition as excellent with no faults and very presentable, Interested parties are very welcome to view the item.

We will give 12 months guarantee free of charge.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Carriage clocks were developed in France during the early nineteenth century as portable timepieces designed for travel. They featured sturdy spring-driven movements, balance wheel escapements, and carrying handles, gaining immense popularity among aristocratic travellers throughout the Victorian era.

High-quality French carriage clocks typically feature heavy gilt brass or bronze cases with bevelled glass panels. The dials are generally crafted from vitreous white enamel or gilded metal masks, encasing precision brass movements with steel components.

Authentic Drocourt clocks usually feature the makers trademark logo, consisting of a D and a P enclosing a clock face, stamped on the backplate or inside the movement casing. Serial numbers and refined casing details, such as complex calendar subdials and a high-grade gilded finish, also distinguish genuine maker pieces.

An antique carriage clock serves as a sophisticated focal point when positioned on a fireplace mantelpiece, executive desk, or styled bookshelf. Pairing the polished brass finish against dark timber, marble, or contemporary neutral backdrops highlights its metallic texture and horological detail.

To preserve the gilt brass case, wipe it gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can wear down original gilding. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years to ensure proper lubrication and function.
