How do I care for cane furniture?

Keep woven cane lounge chairs away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent the natural material from becoming brittle. Regular dusting with a soft brush maintains the weave without damaging the fibres. Periodically wiping the cane with a damp sponge helps restore slight moisture, though excessive soaking must be avoided. Allow the material to dry completely before use.

Can I reupholster a bergere chair?

Many bergere chairs feature drop-in cushions or upholstered seat pads that can be recovered in compatible fabrics such as velvet or linen. The wooden frame and cane panels remain untouched during this process. Consulting a specialist ensures that any replacement cushions match the historical context of the piece. Loose cushions offer versatility while preserving the underlying cane structure.

Where were plantation chairs used?

Plantation chairs served in colonial residences and verandahs where extended footrests and reclining backs provided relief in warm climates. Their open wooden and cane construction maximised airflow. These chairs eventually found their way into domestic European interiors as distinctive pieces for reading rooms and conservatories. Their generous proportions distinguish them from standard armchairs.

What is bentwood furniture?

Bentwood furniture utilises solid timber softened by steam pressure, allowing craftsmen to bend the material into sweeping curves without breaking. This method created lightweight, resilient frames for rocking chairs and loungers. The resulting silhouettes defined much of the modern seating design seen in early twentieth-century interiors. These frames require minimal joints, enhancing overall structural stability.
