What is a wooden figure lamp?

A wooden figure lamp is a lighting fixture that incorporates a carved human, animal, or mythical sculpture into its base or stem. These pieces combine decorative art with domestic illumination. They utilise materials like carved root wood, walnut, and oak, often originating from periods such as the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

How do I date an antique figure lamp?

Dating relies on examining the tool marks, wood species, and stylistic conventions associated with periods like the Victorian era or Art Deco. Examining the base and wiring channels also provides clues to the age of the modification. Comparison with documented regional styles, such as Black Forest or Venetian baroque carvings, helps narrow down the decade of production.

Where should I place a floor lamp version?

Floor lamp versions and torcheres suit corners of reception rooms or beside large pieces of furniture where their height provides balanced illumination. They function effectively as sculptural focal points in a room. Ensure the placement protects the carved wood surfaces from direct heat sources and excessive sunlight.

Are these lamps originally electrified?

Most antique wooden figure lamps were adapted for electricity from earlier oil lamps, candlesticks, or purely decorative statues. The electrical fittings are typically twentieth-century additions. Buyers should inspect the internal wiring and consult a professional electrician to ensure modern safety standards are met.
