How do I choose the right size?

Measure your available wall space and ceiling height carefully before selecting a wide bookcase. Consider the depth required for your largest volumes. Account for architectural obstacles like skirting boards and plug sockets so the unit sits flush against the wall.

Are shelves usually adjustable?

Many larger library bookcases feature adjustable wooden shelves supported by pegs or ratchets. This allows you to accommodate oversized folios and smaller paperbacks alike. Check the listing details to confirm whether the shelving system is fixed or movable.

How do I care for timber shelves?

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and avoid placing wooden furniture in direct sunlight or near heat sources. Excessive temperature changes can cause timber and veneer to dry out. Apply appropriate furniture wax sparingly to maintain the finish without building up sticky residue.

How do I identify the wood type?

Examine the grain pattern, colour variation, and weight of the timber used in the carcase and shelves. Mahogany typically shows a reddish-brown tone, while oak displays prominent medullary rays. Figured woods like burr walnut exhibit intricate swirling patterns created from tree growths.
