How were bedside tables used originally?

These pieces served as bedside storage for chamber pots, water jugs, and personal belongings before modern plumbing and electrification. The stone tops provided a durable, wipe-clean surface that resisted spills from lamps and water pitchers. Over time, their function shifted toward holding reading lamps and alarm clocks while remaining a central fixture of bedroom organisation.

How do I care for a marble top?

Marble requires gentle cleaning with mild soap and water, avoiding acidic substances that can etch the polished surface. Regular dusting and prompt attention to liquid spills help maintain the stone over decades of daily use. Using coasters and mats protects the porous material from staining while preserving the natural finish of the stone.

Are most of these tables sold in pairs?

Many of the listed pieces come as matched pairs created for twin beds in grander nineteenth and early twentieth-century bedrooms. Single tables also appear frequently, originating from smaller rooms or single-bed arrangements. Pairs tend to share identical timber graining, hardware, and marble veining from the original workshop production.

What distinguishes French revival styles?

French revival pieces draw on historical design movements like Louis XV and Louis XVI, incorporating curved cabriole legs or restrained neoclassical straight lines. These items often feature decorative painted finishes or enriched brass mounts. They reflect later periods looking back to earlier royal aesthetics, adapting those grand forms for domestic bedroom use.
