What is a potboard base?

A potboard base is a low kitchen or dining sideboard featuring a solid low shelf fixed between the legs beneath the main drawers. This lower tier provided practical storage for heavy metal cookware in traditional homes. Over generations, these surfaces developed deep patination from daily use and cleaning. They form the defining characteristic of this specific regional furniture type.

Where were these dressers made?

These pieces originate primarily from Welsh counties such as Montgomeryshire and Carmarthenshire, alongside broader English provincial workshops. Local country cabinetmakers constructed them using native timbers to serve rural domestic needs. Regional traits often appear in the drawer arrangements and timber selection. Each area developed slight variations in proportion and hardware styles.

Did all dressers have plate racks?

Many surviving pieces appear today as lower bases without their original upper plate racks. Separation frequently occurred over centuries as houses changed and upper sections sustained damage. Some examples retain integrated high racks, while others were built strictly as low sideboard bases. Both configurations represent authentic historical forms found in country houses.

How do I date an oak base?

Dating relies on examining construction methods, timber characteristics, and hardware fixings. Eighteenth-century examples typically display hand-cut joinery, pegged framing, and vernacular Georgian proportions. Nineteenth-century pieces often incorporate machine-sawn elements and slightly different drawer framing techniques. Examining the wear patterns on the potboard and feet also aids chronological placement.
