What is a treen vessel?

A treen vessel is a small, functional wooden object shaped by hand or turned on a lathe for domestic, culinary, or medicinal purposes. These items range from simple kitchen bowls to intricate spice containers. Collectors prize them for their connection to everyday historical life and the tactile qualities of aged wood.

How were wooden mortars used?

Wooden mortars served alongside pestles to grind spices, medical ingredients, and dried herbs for domestic or apothecary use. Lignum vitae and fruitwood provided the necessary hardness to withstand repeated pounding. Over time, the interior surfaces absorbed the oils and aromas of the materials processed within them.

How can I tell the age?

Age is determined by observing tool marks left by early lathes, the type of timber utilised, and the natural wear patterns across the surface. Specific styles of turning often align with recognised periods such as the Georgian or Victorian eras. A warm, deep patina also accumulates slowly over centuries of regular handling.
