How do I care for vintage framed paintings?

Keep works out of direct sunlight to prevent fading on both the painted surface and any paper components. Maintain stable indoor humidity to protect wooden frames and canvas tension. Dust wooden and gilt surrounds gently with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners on painted surfaces or exposed paper.

Are these frames original to the paintings?

Many pieces retain their original period surrounds, which match the stylistic conventions of the era in which the artwork was produced. This includes carved wooden mouldings, gesso finishes and brass elements characteristic of Victorian and mid-century design. Some items may have been paired with complementary period mounts later in their history to enhance presentation. Checking the materials and backing helps determine the age relationship between art and surround.

How do I identify the age of a piece?

Age is determined by examining the painting medium, support materials and construction style of the surround. Nineteenth-century works often utilise heavy watercolours on paper or traditional oil on canvas, while mid-century items embrace board supports and modern palettes. Signatures, dates, artist attributions and framing techniques provide further chronological clues. Examining the reverse of the canvas or board often reveals historical labels or stamps.
