Where should an overmantel mirror hang?

These mirrors traditionally hang centered above a fireplace mantelpiece, where their height fills the vertical space below the ceiling. They also work well on principal walls in hallways or reception rooms to draw light into the space. Ensure the wall construction and fixings can support the substantial weight of a large timber and gesso frame. Hanging height should balance the scale of the mantelpiece and the ceiling height of the room.

How do I tell Victorian from Georgian mirrors?

Georgian mirrors often display restrained classical proportions, architectural symmetry, and mahogany or parcel-gilt finishes. Victorian pieces tend toward heavier ornamentation, elaborate gesso mouldings, and bright gilding. Reviewing the construction methods at the back of the frame helps confirm the period. Early frames use hand-cut fixings and older pine or oak backing boards distinct from later industrial production.

Are the mirror plates original?

Many antique mirrors retain their original glass plates, which often display subtle foxing, light oxidation, and tiny imperfections in the reflection. Replacement plates usually present a completely clear, modern surface without historical age marks. Original glass adds character and confirms the age of the piece. Look closely at the edges of the glass and the silver backing to assess its authenticity.

How do I clean a giltwood frame?

Dust giltwood frames gently with a very soft, dry brush or feather duster to remove surface particles. Avoid liquid cleaners, polishes, or damp cloths, which can strip delicate gold leaf and soften the underlying gesso. Take care around areas where the gesso or gilding shows minor flaking or age. Professional conservators should handle any serious cleaning or stabilization of the frame surface.
