What is a vintage military blanket box?

A vintage military blanket box is a nineteenth-century storage trunk built for officers on active service or long voyages. These chests were constructed from durable timbers to protect uniforms and bedding from damp conditions and insects. Today, these pieces function as practical storage furniture for blankets and household items at the foot of a bed or in a living room.

Why use camphor wood for military trunks?

Camphor wood emits a distinct natural aroma that repels moths and silverfish, protecting wool blankets and uniforms during prolonged storage. The timber also resists moisture and humidity in tropical climates. These practical properties made camphor the preferred material for campaign chests used by officers stationed abroad.

How do I identify a campaign style chest?

Campaign style trunks feature flush-mounted brass handles, reinforced metal corners, and recessed hardware designed to prevent snagging during transport. These elements allowed multiple chests to stack securely inside tents or cargo holds. Many examples also include inscriptions or brass plaques detailing the original owner's name and regiment.

Can I use these chests for everyday storage?

These robust trunks provide deep interior space suitable for storing heavy winter blankets, bedding, or personal keepsakes. Their solid construction easily supports everyday domestic use. Place the chest away from direct heat sources to protect the historic timber and maintain the original finish.
