How do I safely rewire an old metal lamp?

Older metal lamps often require modern wiring to meet safety standards. A qualified electrician can replace perished internal flex and fit contemporary lamp holders while preserving the original metal shell. Retaining the original switch or plug where possible helps maintain the historic integrity of the object during rewiring.

How do I clean patinated brass or bronze?

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth to protect the surface history. Avoid harsh metal polishes that strip away historical patinas and age character. Light application of microcrystalline wax can help protect exposed metal surfaces from further oxidation without altering the appearance.

How can I tell Art Deco from earlier styles?

Art Deco lighting from the 1920s and 1930s emphasises geometric lines, chrome plating, and streamlined Machine Age forms. By contrast, Victorian and Edwardian pieces favour ornate floral casting, classical columns, and heavy brass. Look for the use of new industrial materials like Bakelite alongside chrome to identify the later modernist periods.

What type of bulb should I use?

Low-wattage LED vintage-style filament bulbs work well in older lamps because they emit minimal heat. This protects delicate materials like old fabric shades, painted toleware, and marble bases from thermal damage. Choosing a warm colour temperature preserves the intended mood of historical lighting.
