What is a linen press?

A linen press is a tall piece of furniture featuring upper doors that enclose sliding shelves, historically used for flat linens. The lower section typically incorporates a chest of drawers for garments. These large cabinets provided essential bedroom storage before fitted wardrobes became standard in domestic interiors.

How do tallboys and chests differ?

A tallboy combines a chest of drawers with a cabinet section, resulting in a significantly taller profile than a standard chest. This vertical format maximises storage capacity while occupying a smaller floor footprint. Standard chests of drawers focus purely on horizontal drawer tiers, often topped by a dressing mirror or surface top.

Where should I place a blanket box?

Blanket boxes function effectively at the foot of a bed or within a hallway to store spare quilts and seasonal textiles. Their solid lids provide a secondary surface for seating or display. Placing these timber chests away from direct heat sources prevents the wood from drying out and cracking over time.

How do I care for antique wood furniture?

Maintaining vintage timber involves dusting with a soft cloth and applying appropriate wax polish periodically to nourish the surface. Avoiding direct sunlight prevents fading and preserves the natural grain. Consistent indoor humidity levels protect joints and veneers from expanding or contracting too rapidly.
