How do I hang a heavy antique chandelier safely?

Heavy fixtures require direct anchoring to a ceiling joist or a steel joist hanger rather than resting on standard plasterboard and lath. A professional electrician should check that the electrical box and mounting hook support the full weight of the bronze or brass structure. Once secured, balance the fixture by ensuring the hanging chain or rod is plumb. Adjust the drop height carefully so the lowest point clears household traffic while providing the intended illumination.

How do I clean crystal lustres and glass shades?

Remove delicate glass shades and crystal drops from the frame before cleaning to prevent accidental breakage against the metal structure. Wash them gently in warm water with a mild dish detergent, then rinse and dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth. For the metal frame and arms, use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to dust the surfaces. Avoid abrasive metal polishes on antique gilt or patinated finishes, as harsh chemicals can strip the original surface treatment.

How do I tell Art Deco from Arts and Crafts lighting?

Arts and Crafts fixtures, originating around the turn of the twentieth century, emphasise honest hand-craftsmanship and visible construction details. They typically utilise hammered copper, leaded glass, plain brass and organic motifs inspired by medieval or natural forms. Art Deco lighting from the 1920s and 1930s embraces streamlined geometry, stylised symmetry and industrial modernity. These pieces frequently feature moulded art glass, chrome, nickel and gilded bronze arranged in sharp angles or sunburst patterns.
