How do I clean tarnished silver plate candelabra?

Use a soft cloth and a gentle silver cream formulated specifically for plated items. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that wears through the thin silver layer down to the base metal. Work carefully around chased details and crevices where polish residue tends to accumulate. Rinse the piece with warm water and dry it immediately with a soft lint-free cloth.

Can I use modern candles in antique candelabra?

Most antique pieces accept standard modern dinner candles, though slight variations in socket widths occur frequently. Checking the diameter of the nozzle ensures the candle sits upright without leaning. Using candle rings or small paper adapters helps secure narrower candles firmly in older sockets. This prevents melted wax from running down the sides of the branching arms.

How do I know if a candelabra is solid silver?

Examine the piece for official hallmarks stamped into the metal near the base or on the underside of the drip pans. Sterling items carry marks indicating the silver standard alongside city and maker stamps. Silver plate items typically display maker marks that denote electroplating processes rather than government assay office hallmarks. Weighted sterling pieces often include a notation of the internal filling material on the base.

What does a convertible candelabra do?

Convertible items feature removable branch sections that lift off the central shaft to create standard standalone candlesticks. This allows users to switch between multi-light table displays and single-candle holders depending on the occasion. Securing pins or threaded screws usually hold the detachable arms in place at the top of the main column. Keeping these small fixing components together prevents loss when altering the configuration.
