What is the scent of camphor wood?

Camphor wood emits a strong, medicinal fragrance that resembles mothballs or eucalyptus. This natural aroma protects stored textiles from moths and silverfish. The scent tends to soften over decades but often revives slightly when the interior is lightly sanded or warmed by sunlight.

How were campaign trunks used?

Military officers and diplomats utilised campaign trunks to transport uniforms, documents, and personal belongings across the British Empire. Their modular design allowed them to be easily strapped to pack animals or stacked in tents. Many featured two-part stacking constructions and sturdy brass corners to endure rough handling during global transit.

Are these trunks waterproof?

While camphor wood has natural resistance to moisture and insects due to its oil content, these chests were not sealed for underwater immersion. Their tight joinery and metal reinforcement protected contents from heavy rain and tropical humidity. Rubber seals did not exist on nineteenth-century trunks, so reliance was placed on overlapping timber lips and sturdy lids.

How do I care for camphor wood?

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sudden temperature shifts to prevent timber splitting. A soft cloth and mild beeswax will maintain the sheen on the exterior surfaces. Avoid placing damp items inside the chest, as trapped moisture can alter the internal finish and weaken the aromatic qualities of the timber.
