How do I hang a heavy bronze plaque safely?

Heavy metal plaques require secure wall fixings, typically screws driven directly into wall studs or heavy-duty anchors suited to brick or plaster. Using picture wire alone on substantial bronze pieces is discouraged due to the considerable weight of the metal. Ensuring the mounting bracket on the reverse of the plaque is structurally sound provides additional security once the piece is positioned on the wall.

How do I clean an antique bronze plaque?

Dusting the surface gently with a soft, dry brush removes loose debris without disturbing the underlying metal finish. Liquid cleaners and aggressive polishing compounds should be avoided, as they strip away the historical patina. Preserving the original aged surface maintains both the visual character and the historical integrity of the piece.

How can I tell bronze from spelter?

Bronze is heavier, denser, and generally cooler to the touch than spelter, displaying a warm metallic grain beneath any surface patination. Spelter is softer and more brittle, often revealing a greyish-white metal beneath scratches. Magnification of worn areas helps identify the underlying material without causing damage to the piece.

What periods do these plaques come from?

The pieces span the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, encompassing Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco eras. Dates range from early nineteenth-century works through to mid-century commemorative items. Stylistic cues and maker marks help narrow down the specific decade of manufacture.
