How do I date a brass desk lamp?

Dating relies on stylistic markers such as Edwardian proportions, 1920s Art Deco geometries or nineteenth-century bronze casting techniques. Examination of the switch mechanisms, wiring channels and shade fittings also aids chronological placement. Material choices shift across decades, moving from heavy cast bronze in the 1860s to flexible brass tubing and glass shades in the 1920s and 1930s.

Were these lamps used only in offices?

While designated as office or bankers lamps, these fixtures served in libraries, banks, notaries and domestic studies. Their primary function was concentrated task lighting for reading and writing. Their adjustable arms and directional shades made them adaptable for any surface requiring focused illumination.

What is a dual chamber stick lamp?

A dual chamber stick lamp is an early lighting form featuring twin receptacles or structured mounts on a single base. These pieces originate from around 1900 and utilise heavier metal builds. They represent a transitional phase in desk lighting before fully articulated electric arms became standard.

How do I maintain a polished brass finish?

Maintenance depends on whether the lamp retains its original aged patina or has a bright metal surface. Gentle dusting with a dry cloth preserves historic patination without stripping the surface. Harsh chemical cleaners should be avoided to protect the integrity of antique brass and bronze finishes.
