A tallboy is a vertical storage unit that combines a chest of drawers with additional vertical height, sometimes incorporating upper cupboards or specialised locking mechanisms. These pieces were designed to provide ample bedroom storage while occupying a smaller floor footprint than traditional wide chests.

How do I use a tallboy?

Tallboys serve as practical bedroom storage for folded clothing, linens, and personal items within the vertical compartments. Placing them against sturdy walls allows safe access to the uppermost drawers while keeping heavy items secured in the lower sections.

Are these pieces solid wood?

Many pieces utilise solid timbers such as pine, mahogany, and oak throughout their structural frames and drawer carcases. Finer decorative examples often apply figured veneers like flame mahogany or burr walnut over secondary timber foundations.

How do I identify a Wellington chest?

A Wellington chest is identified by its narrow, tall proportions and a hinged locking flap that secures all drawers simultaneously down one side. This specific mechanism distinguishes them from standard stacked drawer chests by offering centralized security for multiple shallow drawers.
