What is a silver toilet jar?

A silver toilet jar is a small container with a silver lid, used historically for powders, creams, or pins on a dressing table. They appear as standalone items or tucked inside larger leather and timber dressing boxes.

How are these jars used today?

Today these jars serve as decorative accessories in bathrooms or bedrooms, holding small items like jewellery or cotton wool. Their cut glass surfaces reflect light well on modern dressing tables.

How do I date a silver jar?

Dating relies heavily on the silver hallmarks stamped onto the metal lids or mounts, which indicate the assay office and year. The style of the glass cutting and the overall form of the container also offer period clues.

What materials are inside fitted boxes?

Fitted vanity boxes often include interiors lined with velvet, leather, or silk to secure the glass jars and bottles. Some compartments hide smaller mirrors or hidden drawers for personal valuables.
