What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is a small Victorian cabinet originally built to hold a chamber pot in the bedroom. They provide enclosed storage next to a bed. Today, buyers use them as bedside tables, lamp stands, or decorative pedestals in living spaces.

How do I date a cabinet?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber choices, and overall design characteristics. Cabinet styles evolved from early rectangular forms to cylindrical pedestal shapes. Maker stamps and retailer labels offer precise chronological markers when present on the timber.

Did they always have marble?

Marble tops appear frequently on Victorian examples to provide a durable, wipe-clean surface for washing accessories. Wooden tops remain equally common across the period. Both finishes were standard options offered by cabinet makers depending on cost.

Are cylindrical cupboards rare?

Cylindrical drum cupboards appear regularly alongside square pedestal variants in the historical record. Their rounded shape requires specialised joinery to form the curved door. They sit comfortably beside various bed heights due to their compact footprint.
