How do I identify a campaign chest?

Campaign chests are built in separate stacking sections featuring recessed brass pull handles and corner brass brackets. These design elements protected the timber edges during military transit. They often use teak, camphor wood or mahogany, allowing the furniture to withstand humid climates while remaining portable.

What is a Wellington chest?

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow set of drawers distinguished by a locking side flap that secures all the drawers simultaneously. This locking mechanism protected valuable papers or jewellery. Such chests were popular for office and bedroom storage throughout the nineteenth century, often executed in mahogany or burr walnut.

Are miniature chests actual furniture?

Miniature chests serve as scale models or apprentice pieces created by trainees to prove their woodworking skill to guild masters. They display the exact dovetailing and construction methods of full-sized pieces. Despite their small proportions, these items functioned as tabletop jewellery boxes or keepsakes.

How do I care for antique drawer surfaces?

Maintain timber surfaces by applying natural beeswax sparingly and buffing with a soft cloth to preserve the patina. Avoid placing pieces near direct heat sources or strong sunlight to prevent veneer cracking. Leather inserts on desks benefit from periodic gentle cleaning with specialist leather balms to prevent drying.
