How do I choose the right size?

Measure your available wall space and consider the drawer depth required for your garments. Two-over-three configurations offer wide storage capacity, while Wellington chests provide vertical volume in compact rooms. Ensure clearance for opening drawers fully against surrounding furniture. Taller pieces work well in rooms with high ceilings, while neater proportions suit smaller bedrooms.

How were these chests used?

Nineteenth-century households relied on these pieces to store folded garments, linens, and personal accessories in sleeping quarters. Specialised variants like secretaire chests also provided a writing surface for correspondence. Top drawers frequently held smaller items or valuables, while deep lower drawers accommodated bulky textiles. They formed the core furniture investment for a Victorian bedroom.

How do I live with antique pine?

Antique pine pieces with original paint or graining bring a relaxed, tactile quality to modern interiors. They pair easily with contemporary white walls and natural textiles. Keep them away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement. Regular dusting with a dry cloth preserves the historical surface finish.

How do I tell mahogany from oak?

Mahogany displays a reddish-brown tone with a fine, uniform grain that often accepts a high polish. Flame mahogany veneer shows dramatic figuring across wide drawer fronts. Oak presents a paler, golden hue with pronounced porous grain patterns and medullary rays. Oak chests often emphasise structural grain or quarter-sawn figuring rather than smooth gloss.
