What is a travelling vanity box?

A travelling vanity box is a portable case designed to hold grooming equipment, cosmetics, and jewellery during transit. These pieces range from wooden chests with fitted bottle trays to leather suitcases from the twentieth century. Interior layouts typically include removable trays, secret compartments, and slots for glass scent bottles and brushes. They allowed owners to maintain their grooming routines away from home.

How were these boxes used?

Owners packed these cases for journeys by carriage, train, or ship to keep personal effects organised and secure. The fitted interior protected fragile glass scent bottles and silver items from the bumps of travel. Upon reaching a destination, the box opened to display its contents on a dressing table. Some designs also incorporated writing slopes or sewing compartments for general use.

How do I date a travelling vanity box?

Dating relies on materials, construction styles, and hallmarks on any silver components. Nineteenth-century examples often feature rosewood or coromandel with brass inlay, whilst twentieth-century pieces utilise crocodile leather or Art Deco forms. Silver mounts and bottle caps carry assay office marks and date letters that pinpoint the exact year of manufacture. Cabinet hardware and lock types also provide clues to the period.

How do I care for a wooden vanity box?

Keep wooden boxes away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Gentle dusting and occasional applications of appropriate wax help maintain the polished finish of rosewood or walnut. Protect interior velvet and leather linings by storing the box in a dry environment. Avoid moisture on metal mounts and glass bottle stoppers.
