What is a teak storage box?

A teak storage box is a durable wooden container utilised for travel, dowry storage, or household organisation. These items range from small spice boxes to large campaign chests. Built across various nineteenth-century regions, they utilise dense timber combined with metal mounts to withstand heavy use and transit.

How were these chests used?

These pieces served practical roles in domestic settings and colonial transport, holding textiles, spices, documents, or personal equipment. Larger dowry and marriage chests functioned as central household furniture items designed to protect valuable family possessions.

Where do these boxes originate?

Origins span Indian workshops, Dutch colonial outposts, Zanzibar, and Burma, reflecting global trade and administrative networks. Each regional style incorporates local woodworking traditions, such as traditional carving or specific brass banding layouts.

How do I care for teak?

Teak requires minimal maintenance due to its natural oil content, benefiting from stable indoor humidity and gentle cleaning. Avoid placing timber boxes near direct heat sources to prevent wood movement or splitting in the joints.
