How do I care for a watercolour painting?

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight to prevent the watercolour pigments from fading over time. Maintain stable humidity levels to protect the paper support and the wooden frame. Ensure the painting remains sealed behind glass to block airborne dust and moisture. Professional framing using acid-free mounts preserves the integrity of antique paper.

What subjects appear in these paintings?

Common subjects include cut flowers in jugs, arrangements of fruit in baskets, and botanical studies of roses and pelargoniums. Some works depict birds' nests on mossy banks alongside spring blossoms. Mid-century examples often feature simplified domestic tableaus with books or kitchen objects. Nineteenth-century pieces tend towards detailed naturalism and elaborate floral displays.

How do I date a watercolour?

Examine the stylistic markers, framing methods, and paper types to establish an approximate period. Victorian pieces often display tight botanical precision, while mid-century works show looser brushwork. Signatures, dates inscribed by the artist, and artist records provide firm chronological anchors. The progression from nineteenth-century naturalism to twentieth-century abstraction guides the dating process.

Bodycolour is an opaque water-based paint that artists use alongside transparent watercolour washes. It allows painters to add solid highlights to petals, fruit, and highlights. This technique creates depth and contrast within the painted surface. Victorian botanical painters utilised bodycolour to capture the density of flower petals.
