What is a davenport desk?

A davenport is a compact writing desk featuring a sloped writing surface with a hinged lid. Beneath this surface lies a set of drawers accessed from the side. Originating in the nineteenth century, these pieces were designed for small spaces and often include a stationery box fixed to the top.

How do I choose the right size?

Measure your available floor space and check the kneehole clearance if you intend to sit at the desk regularly. Compact pedestal desks and writing tables offer narrow depths suitable for residential home offices. Consider whether you need drawer storage or prefer an open writing table with minimal visual weight in the room.

Are these desks suitable for daily use?

Most period writing desks accommodate laptops and modern paperwork while retaining their historical character. Solid timber construction and traditional joinery ensure durability for regular work. Protect leather writing surfaces with blotters and maintain the timber finish with appropriate wax polishes to preserve the wood.

How do I identify the period?

Examine the timber selection, secondary woods inside the drawers, and structural hardware such as brass handles and locks. Georgian and Regency pieces often display straight-grained mahogany and hand-cut dovetails. Victorian and Edwardian examples frequently utilise burr walnut veneers, satinwood interiors, or lighter oak frames reflecting the prevailing taste of those decades.
