What is a silver liquor bottle label?

A silver liquor bottle label is a small tag that hangs around the neck of a decanter to identify the specific spirit inside. They serve both a practical purpose at the table and a decorative one. Most examples are suspended on small silver chains and feature pierced or engraved titles designating drinks like sherry, port, or whisky.

How do I date a silver decanter label?

Dating relies on reading the hallmarks stamped into the metal, which indicate the assay office and year of production. Stylistic clues like Georgian Regency shapes or Victorian Rococo Revival details also help determine the period. Makers' marks provide further confirmation of the era in which the silversmith worked.

Were these labels used only for wine?

No, these labels identify a wide variety of spirits and fortified wines including rum, gin, brandy, whisky, sherry, and Madeira. Individual labels correspond to the specific contents of each decanter on the sideboard. Matching sets often include multiple distinct titles for different bottles.

How should I display antique decanter labels?

These labels are traditionally hung around the necks of glass decanters using their original or replacement chains. They can also be displayed flat in specialised cabinets or mounted frames. Pairing them with period glass decanters creates an authentic barware display.
