What is a silver letter holder desk accessory?

It is a desktop item fashioned to hold letters, cards and telegrams in an upright position. Materials typically combine sterling silver with tortoiseshell, leather or wood. These pieces served a practical function in nineteenth and early twentieth-century offices and studies. Today they function as both decorative objects and desk organisers.

How do you date an antique silver desk clip?

Dating relies on assay office hallmarks, maker marks and style periods such as Victorian, Edwardian or Art Deco. Examination of the spring mechanism and fastening construction also offers chronological clues. Records on silver marks help pinpoint the exact year of manufacture in British pieces. Stylistic shifts from Victorian ornamentation to Edwardian and Art Deco designs indicate the era of production.

Were these pieces used for letters or telegrams?

They accommodated various forms of correspondence, including letters, notes, cards and telegrams. Specific items like telegram folders and postal racks were shaped for precise paper formats. Desk clips secured loose papers on the writing surface to prevent loss. Wax holders and bougie boxes supported the parallel task of sealing envelopes.

What materials are found on these desk items?

Sterling silver and silver plate provide the structural mounts and frames. Insets of tortoiseshell, pink guilloche enamel, hardwood and leather appear across different pieces. Some examples incorporate sealing wax and steel springs for operational use. The combination of silver with organic materials defines much of the Victorian and Edwardian output.
