What were silver handled baskets used for?

These vessels served dining tables and parlours to hold dry goods, sugar, fruit or bread. Smaller versions held sweetmeats or cream, while larger bowls displayed fruit or cakes. In grand households, they moved from the sideboard to the dining table during formal courses. Their openwork designs allowed air to circulate around fruit and baked goods.

How do I clean a silver basket?

Use a soft microfibre cloth and a reputable silver polish formulated for sterling or plated surfaces. Avoid abrasive pads that scratch soft metals or wear away thin plating. Take care around glass liners and delicate pierced sections where polish can become trapped. Rinsing with warm water and drying immediately preserves the finish.

Are glass liners original?

Many baskets paired with cranberry or ruby glass liners retain their original matching vessels, fitted specifically to the metal frame. Collectors look for snug fits and matching period characteristics. Replacement liners appear frequently due to the fragile nature of nineteenth-century glass. Inspecting the rim and base helps determine if the glass matches the age of the silver.

How can I tell Georgian silver from Victorian?

Georgian pieces from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries often feature crisp hand-piercing, Neoclassical proportions and crisp maker punches. Victorian and Edwardian items introduce heavier cast mounts, floral repoussé and Art Nouveau curves. Hallmarks stamped on the metal provide definitive date letters and city marks. Comparing the stylistic weight and decorative motifs also clarifies the manufacturing era.
