How do I clean silver gilt wood?

Dust surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush to protect the delicate metallic leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners or chemical polishes that can strip away the historical finish. Take care around distressed areas where the underlying gesso or wood might be exposed. Gentle maintenance preserves the original patina over decades of display.

Where should I hang a silver gilt mirror?

Position mirrors above mantelpieces or on principal walls where they can reflect natural light around the room. Their metallic frames act as focal points in both traditional and modern interiors. Ensure the wall structure supports the weight of large carved wooden frames. Avoid placing them in rooms with excessive moisture to protect the silver leaf and glass.

What is the difference between silver gilt and silvered wood?

Silver gilt involves applying actual silver leaf onto a prepared gesso and wood surface. Silvered wood often uses alternative metallic paints or finishes to mimic the effect. Traditional leaf application creates a warmer, deeper lustre that ages with a distinct character. Examination of the surface under magnification reveals the thin, overlapping metallic sheets.

How can I date a carved wooden mirror?

Examine the construction joints, backing boards, and the type of glass used within the frame. Older pieces from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries often display hand-beveled mercury glass and pegged joinery. Stylistic cues such as Rococo scrolls or Louis Philippe proportions also help place an object within its correct historical era. Comparing the gesso composition provides further clues to the period of manufacture.
